ADA Stair and Handrail Requirements Explained

Handrail Height: 34 to 38 Inches
Measure vertically from the walking surface, or the stair nosing, to the top of the gripping surface. ADA handrails must fall between 34 and 38 inches. This range is narrower than OSHA's 30 to 38 inches. If a space must satisfy both, use 34 to 38 inches.
Handrails on Both Sides
Some residential code paths only require a rail on one side for narrow stairs. ADA stair and handrail requirements are stricter. Every ADA-compliant stair needs continuous handrails on both sides of each flight, based on the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.
Extensions Past the Top and Bottom Step
This rule trips people up the most. Handrails must extend at least 12 inches beyond the top riser. At the bottom, they must extend the depth of one tread plus 12 inches. The extension gives a person using the rail a grip point before their foot reaches the change in level.
Grip Diameter and Clearance
- Circular handrails: 1¼ to 2 inches in diameter.
- Non-circular profiles: a perimeter of 4 to 6¼ inches, with a maximum cross-section of 2¼ inches.
- Wall clearance: at least 1½ inches between the handrail and any wall.
Tread and Riser Rules
ADA stairs need uniform riser heights and tread depths, with no more than ⅜ inch of variation. Minimum tread depth is 11 inches, deeper than the IRC's 10 inch residential minimum. ADA writes this rule around consistent, predictable foot placement for people with mobility or vision impairments. Nosing projection is capped at 1½ inches. Abrupt 90 degree nosings are not allowed; they must be curved or angled.
