Stair nosing is the small overhang at the front edge of a tread, and building code sets specific limits on how far it can project and how it has to be shaped.
Stair nosing is the part of a tread that overhangs the riser below it. It is the small lip your toe brushes if you climb two steps at a time. This looks like a finish detail, but building code treats it as a safety feature with specific, enforced limits.
What Stair Nosing Actually Does
Nosing adds usable foot space to a tread without increasing the total run of the staircase. The overhang gives your foot more room while the horizontal distance between riser faces stays the same. It is also what your foot naturally catches on if you misjudge a step. That is exactly why code regulates its shape and size instead of leaving it to preference.
The IRC Projection Limit
Under the IRC, stair nosing may project ¾ to 1¼ inches beyond the riser face below it. Too little projection wastes the safety margin the rule intends. A nosing that projects too far creates a lip that catches a heel or toe on the way down, which is a real trip hazard.
No Sharp 90 Degree Edges
Code requires the leading edge of the nosing to carry a curve or bevel of at least ⅟16 inch radius. A sharp, perfectly square nosing edge fails inspection. This small radius lowers the chance of a shoe catching squarely on the edge.
How Nosing Affects Tread Depth Math
This detail trips people up when they calculate stairs by hand. The IRC's 10 inch minimum tread depth measures horizontally between the leading edges of adjacent nosings. It does not measure the depth of the flat board itself. A tread board that measures 9¼ inches deep can still satisfy the 10 inch requirement, since the 1 inch nosing overhang makes up the rest. When Nosing Is Not Required
Some code paths allow sloped risers instead of a projecting nosing. The riser face angles back under the tread above it. This works as long as the same effective tread depth requirement is met. Solid risers with no nosing at all are also allowed on some stair types, provided the minimum tread depth checks out on its own.

Open risers, with no vertical board between treads, still need to meet nosing and tread depth rules on the treads themselves. They also face a separate code limit on the open gap size. A 4 inch sphere cannot pass through, the same rule used for baluster spacing.
What material works best for durable stair nosing?
Aluminum and rubber nosing strips hold up well on high-traffic commercial stairs, since they resist wear and add slip resistance. Wood nosing suits most residential stairs and matches the tread material for a seamless look. Stone and tile stairs often use a matching stone nosing or a metal insert to protect the vulnerable front edge from chipping.
Can I retrofit nosing onto an existing stair?
Yes. Adhesive-backed nosing strips and nosing caps let you add proper projection and slip resistance to an existing tread without rebuilding the stair. This is a common fix for a stair that fails an inspection solely on the nosing detail.
