Why Accurate Spiral Calculations Matter
Spiral staircases must meet specific code requirements that differ from straight stairs. The IRC Section R311.7.10.1 requires a minimum clear width of 26 inches measured at the walking line, and each tread must be at least 7½ inches deep at a point 12 inches from the narrow edge. Incorrect spiral stair design can create dangerous headroom conditions and undersized treads.
