What Is the Angle/Pitch Calculator?
Calculate stair angle, pitch, and slope ratio with our dedicated calculator. The angle of a staircase determines comfort, safety, and code compliance. This tool visualizes where your design falls on the safety spectrum - from gentle ramps to steep ship ladders.
How to Use This Calculator
- Enter the rise (vertical) and run (horizontal) per step.
- Review the calculated angle in degrees, slope ratio, and pitch percentage.
- Check the safety zone visualization to see if your angle is within comfortable limits.
Why Accurate Angle/Pitch Calculations Matter
Residential stairs should be between 30° and 37° for optimal comfort. Stairs steeper than 42° require handrails on both sides and may not be permitted as primary access. The IRC's maximum 7¾-inch riser and minimum 10-inch tread naturally produce angles of 32°–38°.
