How to Use This Calculator
- Measure the total rise - the vertical stair height from the finished lower floor to the finished upper floor - and enter it.

Why Accurate Stair Height Calculations Matter
Step height is the most safety-critical stair dimension there is. The International Residential Code (IRC R311.7.5.1) caps residential riser height at 7¾ inches, and - just as important - requires every riser in a flight to be within 3/8 inch of the others. Uneven step heights are a leading cause of trip-and-fall injuries because your body learns the rhythm of a staircase on the first two steps.
